Marie-Adèle de Villiers is a Cape Town based artist focusing on drawing and painting, with a Fine Arts degree from Stellenbosch University. Following the completion of her final year in 2014, she was one of the recipients of the Keith Dietrich award, granted for completing your final year with distinction. She predominantly produces drawings and paintings of mountains, with an interest in time and process, and with a desire to honour the ultimate Creator God, by whom and for whom she exists and strives to create.
De Villiers entertains the idea of mountains as the grandfathers of nature, and therefore sees them as inspiring a sense of perspective, something greater, familiarity and timelessness. She is interested in the themes of time, process, space, the concept of the sublime and viewing mountains as these ancient wonders in an unceasing flow of representations, standing as witnesses to the eternal God who made them and existed before them.
After mainly pursuing other interests, including a year abroad, with art only a sideline vocation, she committed to a career as an artist at the start of 2018. She has since been building her career with various undertakings, including a number of commissions and group exhibitions. In 2019 her artwork “the before is now |” was selected as part of the top 80 in the Sasol New Signatures Art Competition.
